What is a Chakra?

What is a Chakra...

In Sanskrit, the word "Chakra" means "disc" or "wheel" and refers to the invisible energy seats/centers in your body. The chakras are wheels of spinning and rotating energy (life force/ prana) that moves inside of you and each chakra corresponds to certain nerve bundles and major organs.

In Sanskrit, the word “Chakra” means “disc” or “wheel” and refers to the invisible energy seats/centers in your body.

The chakras are wheels of spinning and rotating energy (life force/ prana) that moves inside of you and each chakra corresponds to certain nerve bundles and major organs.

Each Chakra has its own corresponding color, area of focus, tone, and vibrational frequency. The chakras can be extremely helpful when assessing areas of your life that need support! The interconnection between your physical body and spiritual (energy) body is fascinating to explore.

When the energy in a chakra is deficient, it is said to be blocked or closed and in that state, the energy can not flow.

On the other hand, when the energy in a Chakra is overflowing, it is stuck in an open state, and too much energy flows. Both conditions leave you feeling out of balance and depleted.

There are seven main chakras that run along your spine, starting at the root (base) chakra all the way up to your head which is the crown chakra. Some believe that we have around 114 different chakras, but most focus on the 7 main ones, which is what we will be focusing on today.

Tuning into your body- Complete 7 Chakra Exercise

OK, so before we dive into the chakras, let us take a moment to tune into our body and see if we can feel the Chakras at work. This may take some time and practice, but if you do the work you will be in touch with your energy force in no time!

Imagination Exercise- Tuning into Our 7 Chakras

Tuning into our 7 Main Chakras

First, let’s get into a quiet place where we can settle into our bodies and just start focusing on our breathing. Take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Do that three times. Let the tension and stress slip away and dissolve with your breathing. Be in the moment and pay attention to your body.

The Root Chakra

Now, bring your attention to the base of the spine, right around the tailbone, and imagine a beautiful bright ball of red light. A red light that’s rotating in a ball that is pulsating with your breath. Just be in that moment.

The Sacral Chakra

Let us now move our attention up the spine to the area right below our belly button. About 2 inches below the belly button and begin to feel the warmth of a bright beautiful orange spinning light. Remember to notice how the ball of light is moving with your breathing.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

Guide your attention a bit higher now, two inches above your belly button. Notice a growing ball of warm yellow light, breathe into it, and let it grow. Strong emotions come from this area! When you hear someone say go with your gut, this area is usually what they are referring to.

The Heart Chakra

Now, we are going to bring our attention further up to our chest, where your heart is. Picture a beautiful emerald green ball of shining light. Again focus on connecting your breath with it and watch it grow and sync to your breathing. Be here for a few moments.

The Throat Chakra

Then, we are going to move up to the throat and imagine a bright blue light spinning and rotating in that area. Be in the moment. Connect and visualize.

The Third Eye Chakra

Next, let us move our attention to the forehead, right in between the eyebrows. This area is a deep indigo and imagine yourself becoming wiser and connecting to the universal energy.

The Crown Chakra

Finally, let’s shift our focus to the top of the head, which is the crown. Picture a beautiful spinning rotating ball of violet light that is beaming out of the top of your head. It’s peaceful and pleasant energy.

What did you experience? Did you feel the energy shifting around? Tune into what your body is doing and telling you!

Now we are ready to explore the 7 Chakras.

Blocked/ Unbalanced Chakras

Yes, our chakras do and can become blocked and cause a variety of problems for us in our everyday life. Remember they are our energy wheels that govern our thinking, feelings, sensations, perceptions, emotions, and intuition.

The energy that flows through us has an effect on us, whether we acknowledge it or not. It has an influence on our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, tendencies, and the actions we take or don’t take.

A blockage in a chakra is an indication of obstruction in our energy flow.

The main reason our chakras get blocked is that we forget our true nature and start trying to be someone else so we “fit” in with what society is telling us! That gives us a false sense of security and does not help us in any way. We want to belong, but do it in a way that is not who we truly are which leads to a false identity and poor self-esteem and we lose our authenticity.

From the time we were born, we are taught a certain way and told how to behave, but that is also hindering us because we are now changing ourselves to try to “fit” in with others. That teaches us to consistently change so others like us.

But what if…..

What if others actually liked us just the way we are? What if they preferred you to be yourself? Sure we aren’t going to get along with everyone, but the ones we do will be the right people for us!

Without knowing our true self we become stressed, anxious, depressed, people pleasers and so much more. We lose our confidence and self-esteem along the way and we are creating an unhealthy ego. And over time we start to think we aren’t good enough.

We then start trying to fill the void we have inside of us by engaging in all the wrong things such as smoking, drinking, binge eating, drugs, television, etc. We numb our minds by watching small screens all day so we don’t have to cope with what’s going on inside of us.
