The Root Chakra: All you need to know about your first Chakra

Sharing is caring!

Welcome you, beautiful SOUL!

The Root Chakra is the first chakra and it’s also one of the most important ones because, without a healthy root, there can be no other. It’s your foundation for grounding to the earth and giving you stability. It affects your sense of safety and security.  It has a deep connection with your physical body, mental health, emotions, and spiritual well-being.

This blog post will explore the root chakra, the key characteristics, the teachings of this Chakra, what it means to have an imbalanced root chakra as well as ways you can balance it for yourself and others.

The energy of this chakra moves downwards from your spine into your pelvic area so that you are grounded in yourself as well as in with what is happening around you.

This chakra also relates to our survival instincts, which include our sexuality and sensuality. You’ll find that many people who have an imbalance or blockage in their roots may have low self-esteem, feel unworthy or undeserving; they may struggle with intimacy issues due to fear, insecurity, or shame.

There are seven main chakras in the body!

The Root Chakra at a Glance

The Root Chakra, also known as Muladhara in Sanskrit (foundation), is located at the base of our spine. The most basic function of this chakra is to take care and preserve our senses for stability, strength, safety, and commitment just like a foundation would keep everything stable.

It governs self-preservation by keeping us grounded or safe enough to explore new territory without fear for ourselves.

The Root Chakra is important to the chakra system because without “roots” it will compromise the entire chakra system, which affects all of our mind, body, and spirit. Only when we feel that our essential needs are met, can we start to grow and heal the rest of the chakras.

The Root Chakra is also believed to be connected with the life force, Kundalini, which can be awakened and moves up the spine into other chakras.

This chakra is associated with the color red which symbolizes primal instincts of strength and vitality. The element it deals with is the Earth.

The mantra for this chakra is “I AM” and will cleanse the aura and energy field. This mantra will keep you grounded and connected with the Earth. Chanting the LAM seed mantra will also have positive effects on this chakra.

Key Characterics of the Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is said to be the “who am I in relation to others” chakra. It’s associated with the following functions or behavioral characteristics

  • Basic Needs (food, sex, shelter, water, sleep, self-preservation)
  • Mental and Emotional Health
  • Security and Safety
  • Survival
  • Grounding
  • Physical identity and aspects of self
  • Support for living our lives
  • Feelings of wanted, needed, and nourished

What the Root Chakra Teaches us

This Chakra teaches us about willpower and how to break free from the emotional baggage that holds us back from accomplishing what we want. We will feel safe and secure, as well as grounded.

If we feel emotionally needy or can’t take responsibility for our own actions that means there may be a block that we have to work on.

If we have blocks in this chakra everything will be distorted. Living life becomes scary and unstable because our “roots” were not properly rooted in a positive way.

Remember, the Root Chakra provides the foundation for which we build our life. It helps us feel safe and secure while allowing us to grow. We feel safe exploring ourselves and diving deeper into who we are. The root chakra is where we ground ourselves to the Earth and anchor our energy so we can manifest the world we desire.

Sometimes we forget the importance of the Root Chakra! “THE ROOTS” is where everything starts!

How can we expect a tree to stand tall and produce the fruit if it has no roots to support its growth?

Signs of an Imbalanced Root Chakra

  • Challenges with physical health
  • Overactive/underactive energy with feelings of anxiety and mental fatigue
  • Emotionally Needy/self centered/ destructive patterns
  • Hoarding
  • Can’t acknowledge personal responsisbility (blames others)
  • Lack mindset
  • Materalistic
  • Feel abandoned
  • Afraid of change
  • Bad money relationship
  • Obesity/ Anorexia
  • Constipation/ Diarrhea
  • Lower Back Pain- Sciatica
  • Poor Circulation
  • Skin Conditions
  • Immune related Issues

For someone who has a blocked/imbalanced Root Chakra, it can be difficult to feel safe and secure in the world. It can lead to thoughts and actions based on a sense of lack and fear.

When the Root Chakra is overactive just the opposite happens. That fear could turn to greed, envy, and paranoia.

How to Balance/Heal/ Open the Root Chakra

There are many ways to balance the Root Chakra. For example, You could do more grounding work such as hiking in nature, being out in nature, gardening, connecting with the earth, and healthy eating (just to name a few).

It’s really ok to march to the beat of your own drums, go out barefoot and walk around, get dirt in between your toes, laugh, and truly be grateful for all you have and the people that make you happy!

The idea here is to balance your “roots” in a safe environment. So do more of what grounds you!

  • Hiking
  • Being present in nature
  • places that bring you Joy and Harmony
  • Cooking
  • Gardening
  • Healthy Eating
  • Mindfulness
  • Awareness- What are the thoughts going through your head?
